33rd Annual 'Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs or Gangs' attracts youth anglers to Compy's Memorial Fishing Pier in Antioch

By David Hurley

After a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the California Striped Bass Association – West Delta Chapter held the 33rd Annual 'Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs or Gangs' Kid's Fishing Derby at Compy's Fishing Pier in Antioch on October 9th. Over 70 youth from around northern California attended the event, accompanied by their families. The annual Kid's Derby was started by the late Uril "Compy' Compomizzo who spent his later years helping youth discover the joys of fishing. Of all of the years over the decades of the derby, no event may have been more important than this year as our youth have been sequestered in their homes for nearly two years due to the pandemic.
The Kid's Derby had been held at Contra Loma Regional Park for decades, but due to high costs for staging the event by the East Bay

Regional Park District, the club relocated the derby to Humphrey's Pier in Antioch for three years before moving to its rightful place at the pier named in Compomizzo's memory four years ago.
Roger Mammon, long-time president of the West Delta Chapter, said, "Compy raised over $100,000 to have divers clean the bottom of the river at the pier to make it snag free. Refrigerators to old boats were removed from the waters surrounding the pier."
In 2000, a plaque and monument dedicated in his name was posted at the pier and it was renamed the U.E. "Compy" Compomizzmo Municipal Fishing Pier. There were no snags experienced this year despite the pier crowded with lines in the water. The primary goal is to get area youth and their families out on the water to enjoy a day of fishing, and most of our participants are fishing for the first time. A dedicated group of 16 volunteers organized everything from registration to a big raffle to cooking lunch, rigging tackle, cutting bait, and measuring all fish caught.
Mammon added, "Although we are unable to have the net pens and the containers loaded with trout as experienced at Contra Loma for years, the event at Compy's Pier brings families out to a safe and kid-friendly location for future adventures. All of the children registered received a goodie bag filled with a variety of donations along with a BBQ lunch prepared by club members. Our annual crab feed in February is always the major funder of the Kid's Derby, and our vice-president, Roger Lund, has been the driver of the event for the past 18 years. Over 45 undersized striped bass were caught, carefully measured, and released back into the water, and since intentionally provided small hooks, there were no fish lost."
The West Delta Chapter is one of the most active remaining chapters of the California Striped Bass Association which was founded in 1974 by the late 'Jolly' Jay Sorensen. The purpose of the organization is the preservation and enhancement of striped bass by the following objectives:
1. Advocacy
2. Promotion of youth fishing
3. A fishing club with a focus on striped bass conservation through respectful careful handling of the resource
4. Dissemination of information relating to the above three objectives to educate and inform our community

Three-year-old Rashaad Bess of El Cerrito made the trek over to the event with his father, Rashaad, and mother, Brittany Hudlin, and using the rod/reel combination that he received for Christmas, he was able to land his first-ever fish at 2 inches. This was the smallest striped bass measured at the tournament, but young Rashaad followed this up with an 11-inch striped bass that was good for third-place in the 3- to 6-year-old division. Typical of many of the families that came to the event for the first time, they plan on coming back to the pier now that they had a positive fishing experience and a really fun day.

The club provided a rod/reel combination and tackle box for derby winners for three places in three different divisions:
3 to 6 years-old 7 to 9 years-old 10 to 15 years-old
1st Seamus McCoanahan – 13-inches Ian Cuevas –
14 5/8th inches Brody Morrissey
13 3/4th inches
2nd Matteo Reynoso – 11 1/8th inches Edger Ruiz III
14 ½ inches Tie –
Maria Segovia/Favian Atilano
3rd Tie –
Rashaad Bess/Bradley Jelly – 11 inches Gael Flores
13 1/8th inches Jaden Rieger
13 ¼ inches

Getting children out on the water to enjoy the magic of the outdoors is incredibly important when so many grow up in front of a computer screen, whether at home or at school. When the Bess family was leaving, father Rashaad said, "We are coming back every year!" That's just what the organizers want to hear.

2019 KIDS FREE FISHING DERBY October 12, 2019

Promoting youth fishing is one of CSBA West Delta Chapter's important objectives. For the last 28 years, we have conducted a free fish derby for local kids. Participants have a chance to fish using tackle that is partially furnished by derby sponsors and partially provided by the club. Club members who are experienced fishermen provide coaching and fishing tips for many kids who are totally unfamiliar with fishing, the water, and the outdoors. Other club members clean and bag caught fish so kids can take their catch home for cooking. Kids learn the fun of fishing as well as the value of our resources and of nature in general. Hundreds of kids participate in this important annual event. Contact the club for details.  The derby is held in the memory of "Compy" Compomizzo and the mission statement is to Get Kids Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs or Gangs".

2018 Kids Free Derby

Our 31st Annual Free Kid's Derby was on October 13, 2018 at Compy's Pier in Antioch, CA.

This event was a huge success. We had over 90 kids participate and they all had a wonderful time.
I would like to first give a big thank you to those members and their friends and family that volunteered their time, both before and after the event. We are also grateful to the City of Antioch who helped arrange the event. If I miss anyone I apologize:
Roger Lund; Melissa Kettler and her daughter; Roger’s friend Roland who helped set up and cook; Gary Arroyo with wife, Renee and daughters Angela and Amanda; Jenny Comages; Ken & Julie Connelly; Tom Coss; Jim & Rebecca Cox; Mike & Judy Hall; Danny Lanzarin who did an outstanding job getting donations and raffle prizes; Steve Morelli; Heather Newton; Matt & Maryanne Tate; Henry Tao; KC Wen; Ron Westhorpe amd the East County Student Anglers. We also had some volunteers from Lucky stores. Jerry Davis supplied 150 sinkers and said if we need more just ask.
A total of 22 thank you letters were sent to the individuals and businesses that donated cash and prizes.
As always we awarded trophies and prizes to the winners of the event in their respective age groups which ran from 3 to 6 years of age; 7 to 9 and 10 to 14.
Every participant received a goody bag and participated in a marble draw for prizes. The kids were treated to a hot dog lunch which included chips, cookies and beverage.
We received a lot of thanks from parents who brought their kids to get them “Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs or Gangs”.
Our Board has also approved a $100.00 donation to the East County Student Anglers for their participation in the event.

PRESIDENT'S CUP

In recognition of the State Board recommendation that all Striper derbies be catch and release only, Capt. Jim Cox came up with this derby for West Delta Chapter members only.  This is a members only event and the entry fee for the year long derby is $5.00.

The derby starts after our November meeting and continues through our November 2016 meeting. We will have a slot length of 27" to 30" for qualifying entries. There will be a maximum of two entries per angler submitted for the derby year. Instructions are to photograph the Striper alongside a visible measuring device. Mail the picture to Roger Mammon, 4720 Oak Forest Av., Oakley,  CA  94561. Or email the picture to: r.mammon@att.net. Along with the picture, include your name, date and general location of the catch and state that the fish was released.

At the end of the derby year a drawing will be held and the winning draw will have a choice of one of the following two prizes:

1. Trip for TWO with Quetzal Adventures, or,

2. One year of free dinners at the club meetings excluding the Christmas Party Dinner.

All entries must be submitted no later than the November meeting. Fish caught after that will qualify for the following year. Remember, we are all on the honor system for this derby so our President says, "play fair."

FISH-A-THONG
It's the Gals vs. the Guys on this fun members-only charter where bragging rights for the year go to the side with the higher total inches of fish caught. Don't ask the Guys how many times the Gals have won this one. Put this one down as fishing, fun, and food.  The 2019 Fish A Thong is scheduled for March 24th on the Happy Hooker out of Martinez, CA.  Members filled the boat and we now have a stand-by list.

CALIFORNIA DAWN CHARTER
Another members-only charter which can be on the Bay, the ocean, or both depending on conditions and what's biting. Good fishing, good company, good fun and good food.

Our annual trip was on  August 7, 2018..  We were just a couple of ling cod shy of boat limits and 3/4 limits of rock fish.  A good time was had by all.
